Famvir (famciclovir) is an antiviral medication that incapacitates the herpes virus by restricting its reproductive ability so the body’s own immune system can then attack it more effectively. It doesn’t cure the HSV ( herpes simplex virus) nor does it eliminate the virus from your body – rather it renders it more susceptible to your own immune system.
There are 2 types of herpes: HSV1 is contracted orally and HSV2 is genital. HSV1 can be spread to the genitals from oral sexual activity. Both of these manifest as blisters. On the mouth they are referred to as cold sores or fever blisters. It’s estimated that 67% of the world’s adults have contracted HSV1 and 21% have contracted HSV2. HSV1 can occur on the lips, tongue, palate, and even nose or eyes. If someone such as a dental worker has impaired skin integrity of their hand or fingers and treats a patients who has HSV1 they can contract it that way. Genital herpes can affect the penis, scrotum, anus or buttocks, labia, or inner vagina, and even the urethra.
Famvir acts on HSV2. It is most effective if taken very early in the outbreak cycle, and best if taken in the prodromal stage, when the patient doesn’t yet have an active outbreak but pain/itch/swelling or other signal lets them know an outbreak is imminent. People who have very frequent outbreaks may even take Famvir daily to significantly decrease the frequency of occurrence.
If taken early, in the prodromal phase, Famvir tends to reduce the severity of symptoms experienced during an outbreak. It can reduce the frequency of the occurrence of outbreaks, and lessen the time a person is contagious. The most common symptoms include tingling, swollen lymph nodes burning, itching, swelling, and there also may be flu-like symptoms. Women frequently also have pain on urination and an increased vaginal discharge. Typically, the fever and body ache-type symptoms are associated with the initial episode when contracting the virus. This is the primary infection period. Sometimes people contract the virus and have no knowledge of it and this is called an asymptomatic infection.
Herpes outbreaks are comprised of a cluster of fluid-filled blisters along with local swelling and sometimes pain, itch, or tingling. After a period of time, the blisters burst and then there is an ulcerated area that becomes dry and scabby and this takes some days to weeks to heal. Usually, as time passes outbreaks become less severe and more time occurs between occurrences. The virus is spread when someone has an active lesion (or is an asymptomatic shedder) and sheds some cells that come in contact with the mucous membranes or an open sore or cut in another person. A mother can pass the virus to her newborn in this manner, and all manner of close contact can spread it when a person is contagious.
Famvir tablets may be taken in a couple of different ways and your doctor will advise what’s right for you. It’s taken with a full glass of water and may be taken with or without food. Some conditions that contraindicate taking Famvir are being pregnant or breastfeeding, having kidney trouble, being allergic to Famvir, lessened immunity, impaired liver function, or lactose intolerance. Certain medications may also be contraindicated for use concurrently with Famvir and include probenecid, raloxifene, and kidney medications. Generic famvir may be obtained online without a prescription.
