Viagra effect was also up to the ear.
A new US study shows people who consume Viagra (a popular brand for sildenafil) or the same drug for erectile dysfunction may have twice their chance of hearing loss. These findings reinforce FDA’s warnings from 2007 on the side effects of this drug.
On a laboratory scale, high doses of Viagra have caused hearing damage in mice. The study also looked at a random sample of more than 40 American men and found that at least one in six people who did not take powerful drugs equivalent to Viagra had deafness. “In contrast, among those who took the drug, nearly one in three lost hearing,” said Gerald McGwin, an epidemiologist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health, told Reuters Health. Their results have been published in the journal Archives of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery.
However, he said, further research is still needed to confirm these findings. The reason, research that relies on the reporting of hearing loss has been criticized as inaccurate. But for men with normal hearing and erectile dysfunction, he said, comparing these potential side effects to scale.

According to the Daily Mail, doctors warned that the Viagra consumed by thousands of British men could cause deafness. Viagra and similar impotence drugs have been linked to hundreds of cases of sudden hearing loss worldwide.
Users in the United States are now warned that the drugs could damage hearing, and British experts behind the invention want the same signal given here.
Experts, from Charing Cross, Stoke Mandeville and Royal Marsden Hospital, interviewed drug watchers in Europe, America, East Asia and Australasia if they have received a “”Viagra deafness”” report – hearing disappears soon after taking an impotent pill. They found 47 suspected cases of sensorineural hearing loss – rapid hearing loss in one or both ears – were associated with Viagra and related drugs like Cialis and Levitra.
A total of 223 other reports made in the US were not included in the study because of lack of detail. The report in the journal The Laryngoscope says the average age of those affected is 57 years, although two of the men involved were only 37 years old. It is unclear how long this problem lasts, but this type of hearing loss, more common due to infection and loud exposure, usually causes permanent damage in one-third of cases.
In a previous study of 29 alleged cases, by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), only a third of cases were classified as temporary. The FDA advises users of Viagra, Cialis or Levitra who find their hearing suddenly deteriorate to immediately stop taking pills and visiting doctors.
British researchers are not sure how Viagra can affect hearing, but that may be the chain of chemical reactions that the trigger has already affected the inside of the ear. “”Medical practitioners involved in prescribing these drugs need to be alert about the possible side effects,”” said Dr Afroze Shah Khan, from ENT (ear nose throat) section of Charing Cross Hospital.
However, the UK medicines watchdog, the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency, said the hearing loss associated with Viagra is “rare”.
